SHADOW MINISTER FOR AGEING AND MENTAL HEALTH
MEMBER FOR FRANKLIN
LIBERAL GOVERNMENT’S BETRAYAL OF OLDER AUSTRALIANS REVEALED AS 126,000 NOW WAIT FOR HOME CARE
The further blow out in the number of older Australians waiting for care underscores the failure of Scott Morrison’s Budget response to this unfolding crisis.
The Budget commitment of 14,000 new home care packages over four years has shown to be woefully inadequate as Labor predicted – the list has now grown by almost 20,000 older Australians in just six months this year.
The Government cannot use the Royal Commission as an excuse to delay action on fixing this crisis now and must deliver additional funding in the upcoming Mid-Year Economic and Fiscal Outlook.
As the list grows longer and longer, fresh stories emerge daily of older Australians waiting for care.
Older Australians are entering residential aged care or even emergency departments rather than being able to stay at home and receive the home care they have been approved for.
Since the first release of data, the waiting list for home care has grown from 88,000 older Australians to more than 126,000.
When Labor said there was a crisis in aged care – the Liberals dismissed it.
The Abbott/Turnbull/Morison Government has responded to this crisis with obfuscation and a complete lack of transparency.
The latest data masks the full extent of this crisis, with the Government removing figures that clearly detail the total number of older Australians waiting for care.
How can anyone trust the Abbott-Turnbull-Morrison Government to undertake the work needed to fix the crisis in aged care when it won’t even be honest with older Australians?
The Minister has already admitted the Government will need to consider other interventions to reduce the list, but with older Australians waiting years for care this action needs to be happening now.
