Your Labor candidate for Cowper at the federal election is Andrew Woodward. He is a passionate advocate for action on climate change, better government services, protecting rights, a forward-looking Australia and reducing inequality in regional and rural Australia.
As Labor’s candidate for Cowper, Andrew promises experience, energy and expertise based on a senior career in international business and government; attainment of two Masters degrees; strong community engagement and, lifelong service to the Labor Party.
Andrew is ‘campaign ready’ for the upcoming election, having mounted a strong challenge for Labor against Tony Abbott when he was the party’s candidate in the Sydney seat of Warringah in 2016. At one stage, he was on track to defeat the former Prime Minister. (Source: AFR).
Andrew first moved to the mid-north coast over thirty years ago (to Taree) and returned after the 2016 election in a ‘tree change’ to Bellingen for life. In between, Andrew has lived in Albury-Wodonga, Newcastle, Canberra, Sydney, Gold Coast and San Francisco.
In a varied career in the corporate world, Andrew started as a journalist in Sydney, regional Australia and in the Federal and New South Wales parliaments, before taking on senior roles in marketing, corporate affairs and management consulting in Australia and overseas. He played a key role in Sydney’s successful bid for and staging of the 2000 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Andrew also held executive positions with the Australian Tourist Commission and Visa Inc. Andrew lived in San Francisco for three years and was Visa’s global head of brand and sponsorship communications from its Silicon Valley Headquarters.
In 2014, Andrew met and trained with Al Gore, the former Vice President of the United States of America, who inspired him to get further involved in action on climate change. This was a pivotal moment in Andrew’s life as he then opted out of the ‘corporate world’ and into his own management consulting and communications practice, specialising in climate change, renewable energy, sustainable development, conservation and environmental advocacy.
Andrew has been a lifelong supporter of the Australian Labor Party and worked in the Keating and Carr Governments as a media adviser. Andrew has been active in the Labor Party since the late 1980’s. Today, he is also a member of LEAN, the Labor Environment Action Network, which is making a significant contribution to Labor’s progressive policies on climate change and other issues. Andrew is also a Member of the Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance trade union, the Australian Conservation Foundation and the Australian Republican Movement.
Andrew holds a Master of Business and Technology (2007) and Master of Environmental Management (2017); both from the University of New South Wales. He did his high schooling at St Augustine’s College, Brookvale, and primary schooling at St Joseph’s, Narrabeen, on Sydney’s northern beaches. Andrew has two teenage children.
